Pipe Dream Sound Design – Scene by scene breakdown
- INT. HALLWAY. MORNING
Foley – Mallory’s footsteps as she walks up hallway, doorbell (ringing repeatedly, almost frantically), sound of door opening (bolt sliding, creak).
Dialogue – “I’m engaged!” Alysa.
Atmos – quiet of the apartment
Music – nil
Sound fx - nil
- INT. KITCHEN. MORNING
Foley – sound of ring spinning on the bench, Alysa’s footsteps as she runs out, door slamming (distant), clattering of ring as it goes down drain, clattering of different utensils as Mal tries to get it out. Zip of Mal’s jacket, door open and close as she leaves house.
Dialogue – Mallory and Alysa
Sound fx – filter over Alysa’s ramblings to be done post, as if she’s speaking from far away or underwater – emphasise Mallory’s disinterest. Returns sharp and clear when Alysa says she has to go.
- ‘glinting sound’ as ring flies through the air
Atmos – quiet of the apartment, ticking clock
Music - Action hero style music to begin playing as soon as Mal gets her idea, and to continue through scene three.
- EXT. PROMINADE LATER
Foley – get footsteps, scrape of brick as it is picked up off ground, Mal’s breathing (assuming she’s puffed out when she gets to jewelers shop), sound of brick dropping (unless we cut before then?)
Dialogue – Nil
Sound fx – choral/choir arrangement as Mal spots the ‘Plumbing for dummy’s’.
Music – action hero music continuing from last scene. Music to cut out briefly when Mal decides to hopscotch. We have nothing but atmost, then to resume as she goes ‘Action/Superhero’ again. Music to fade away when she finds the jewelers.
Atmos – sleepy, suburban street sounds. Early morning. Distant sounds of cars, occasional birds.
- INT. KITCHEN. DAY
Foley – Hiss and spray of water as Mal tries to get through the pipe, grating and banging of saw, doorbell again (or frantic knocking?)
Dialogue – nil
Sound fx – ‘glinting’ sound of the ring as Mal finally gets it out.
Music - nil
Atmos – quiet of the aparment, dripping of the water
- EXT. FRONT DOOR. DAY
Foley – opening and closing of door, footsteps, clatter as ring bounces down sewer
Dialogue – Alysa
Sound fx – glinting of ring as it flies through the air….again.
Music – Nil during the scene, but as the credits play some comical music to emphasise the ridiculousness of Mal’s situation.
Atmos – Outdoors – the birds and traffic (distant).
